In conjunction with upcoming International Women’s day, Udaan , a club for women entrepreneurs, is organizing Women’s Day Out fair at King’s Mansion Condominium, Function room, on 4th Mar, from 12:00am to 7:00pm!

So ladies get set for a date with yourself, pamper yourself with various accessories and costumes, buy beautiful interiors for your surroundings, after all you are special!

Its all about exclusivity which every women looks out for. Udaan has special taken care of every women’s requirement and arranged for various stalls related to jewellery, kurtis, home interiors, sarees, bed linen, kids wear, and footwears too. These stalls will be displaying products specially hand chosen from different countries like Phillipines, Pakistan and India.

Udaan is also organizing lucky draws for visitors which are sponsored by Aphea Boutique Organique, Revive Holistic Center, and Dancing Feets.

There are some important information that we need to understand when get involved in Social Media Marketing in order for our business to success. Social Media Marketing can be a failure if you don’t know the “rules” and simply go ahead and overdo it.
Social media is closely related to Web 2.0 and therefore we must take note of the following when implement the social media marketing.
1. We must be a real user - Here we are not referring to get a robot to work for us. What I mean is to show your real interests and vote for your favourite or what you found interesting. If you are getting your staff to involve at social bookmarking sites like StumbleUpon, Digg or Delicious, it’s important for them to focus on the topics or articles that they like so that they might not lose interest in social media.
2. Get involved in social media sites and understand them – We need to get involve ourselves in different top social media sites and to understand how the sites are working. It’s ideally to use it on a regular basis especially with the social bookmarking sites.
3. Focus on your niche – We might find some top sites like StumbleUpon or Digg drive many visitors to certain people. However, it’s always good for us to identify our niche and focus on sites that can drive correct traffic. Although focus on a niche might send fewer visitors, but those visitors will likely find the content more relevant and help to increase your conversion rate.
4. No control on them – We totally have no control on the results and also the results can’t be guaranteed. It’s just like we don’t have any control over the search engine rankings.
5. Digg is not the only social media site – Many people know the powerful of Digg and the Digg effect. However, Digg is not the only social media site and failure in Digg doesn’t mean that your website or campaign failure. We can always drive massive traffic from other social media sites.
6. Good contents not always mean good traffic – The main key is what is the social media users want at the particular site. Althought you have generate very good content but it doesn’t guarantee you the traffic and there might be very few users really picked it up.
7. No heavy pitching or selling – Many content sharing sites don’t allow advertising content and we should go light on selling or promotional messaging. Instead of writing about how great our products are, we should go for the benefits or features of the products.
8. Always offer value especially to your niche – Value means different things to different people. Same contents but always mean different value to users and we should always create content that offer value to our niche.
9. Participate personally in communities – It’s always essential for us to participate personally and engage with communities on social networks. Leaving comments on blogs and forums or joining groups on Facebook are good ways to build online presence and get people to notice about you.
10. Should also use other strategies – Don’t only rely on social media marketing. Other strategies like SEO, LSI or PPC Campaigns are also important to bring in the great results.

New Year Business Mixer – (Jan)

It’s all about knowledge because knowledge is power!

Udaan’s New Year Mixer was organized on 17th Jan at Bullion Park Condo. Mixer was well attended and participants got a chance for networking with like minded fellow entrepreneurs. Udaan emphasized on the importance of significant knowledge related to various aspects of business. Udaan is a platform where women entrepreneurs gather to share ideas and exchange knowledge to help fellow entrepreneurs to expand the horizon of their thinking and also to expand their business.

To empower attendees with power of knowledge in field of taxation and registration of companies in Singapore, Udaan organised a talk by MSS Consultancy which is a professional firm providing a comprehensive range of services to establish and manage businesses. Ms Shamala Rajasingham and Ms Mrinal Patvardhan, were the speakers for the talk. They shared the importance, benefits, advantages and disadvantages between Sole proprietorship, Partnership and Private ltd. They also shared about Virtual Offices, various forms to be submitted to IRAS, legalities with ACRA/URA. Q/A session at the end of the the session was helpful in resolving participants queries.

Udaan also highlighted about various events organised in 2011. Participants have shared some great feedback. The next mixer will be in March 2012.

Udaan is looking forward for launch of Singapore’s first online Women Business Directory targeted at home based business and SME’s. Udaan will be promoting women directory throughout Singapore through various mediums. The first 100 registrations will be FREE.

Topic of the day was ‘Challenges being faced by entrepreneurs in their business‘. Month of October was marked up with fairs, get togethers, and exhibitions for Udaan!

Udaan Fair-Raas

Udaan proudly supported “Raas Nirvana Dandiya” organised by V Indus group on 1st Oct at Singapore Khalsa Association. Udaan fair consisted of stalls like jewellery, kurti, homedecor, and various other stalls. Fair was well received in the programme and was one of the highlights of the event. With festivals around visitors were happy to visit stalls for festival shopping. Specially home decor and Diwali decor stalls were very well received by the visitors.

Udaan Fair - melville

Udaan ‘Festive’ fair at Melville park condominium was organized on 9th Oct. This fair was specially organized for residents of the Melville park condominium and was very well received . There was stalls for jewellery, kurti, and beautiful home decor items. At the end of the fair 3 lucky draw winners receive T Shirts sponsored by Dancing Feets, Vouchers sponsored by Ipseity and Revive holistic centre. Residents were quite happy to visit fair as they got exclusive things from India and that too under one roof which full filled there complete shopping requirements. Udaan fair at Melville proved the power of Unity in diversity and fulfilled Udaan’s objective of helping entrepreneurs in reaching out to more people.

1. Please share with our readers little bit about yourself?
A little about myself would be “a regular Mumbai girl married to a Delhi guy, now based out of Singapore…was happily enjoying my sabbatical from professional life when the entrepreneurial bug bit me”.

2. So when did you venture into this business? And what conspired or motivated you to take a plunge into this venture. ?
The business Saffron Sutra Pte Ltd was incorporated in May 2011 while its retail outlet Aphea Boutique Organique started operations this August. As to what motivated me to take this plunge…I guess it was a string of situations all put together. I was happy being home-maker when we moved to Singapore. As my husband moved into a new role professionally, his travelling increased greatly. I had lots of time and nothing substantial to do. My husband suggested I do something on my own. So I gave that a serious thought but if I was investing so much of our time and money, I thought it better be something I am passionate about myself. And bingo!! ORGANICS it was. Thus was born the concept of Aphea Boutique Organique, an organic concept store.

3. Can you share with us, some of the challenges you faced during your initial days?
I am still in my very nascent stage and challenges are thrown at my face almost daily. The major problem I encounter is lack of awareness about organic products. People understand organic food, but when it comes to organic bath and beauty care or organic clothes, people fail to comprehend. Those that do know about it, feel its okay to not buy these but buy regular stuff because of the disparity in prices. Creating awareness about the choices available to the consumer (organics v/s non-organics) and educating them to buy organics when they can afford to, is the biggest challenge.

4. So how do you balance your personal and professional life?
At the risk of not sounding like an “entrepreneur”, I must admit that for me, my family comes first. I start my store at 11 in the morning, so I ensure my husband comfortably leaves for work and I finish all chores of a typical Indian household. I close by 7 pm and after that its all family time. I don’t work on Saturdays and on Sundays, my husband joins me at Aphea so we get time with each other.

5. What would you suggest to other aspiring women who want to venture out on their own ?
The most important thing is to start something only if you firmly believe in its philosophy. I sell organics/ natural products because I use them myself (I have extremely sensitive skin) and I really believe they are good. If that belief is lacking, one will tend to give up as soon as one sees obstacles/ hurdles in their way. Its the belief in what you do that will pull you through difficult and trying times.

6. Is there any person who has mentored/supported/inspired you?
My husband, Saurabh Dasgupta. He put the seed of starting an enterprise in my mind, he nourished that seed with a lot of encouragement and guidance. I always discuss my plans and steps in business with him for his view and he is eternally supportive.

7. What do you have in the pipeline for your company’s/business future development?
As I mentioned, the biggest challenge is creating awareness about organics and educating people on how to read “labels” on products so they differentiate between authentic “green” products and those that are mere eye-washes. We are collaborating with like-minded ventures who also believe in natural, holistic and healthy way of life to conduct talks and seminars. We also have some fairs and exhibitions lined-up to create brand visibility. Besides, we are always on a look out for new great products to be added to our portfolio. Like we recently added Hurraw! Lip Balms to our range which are lip balms that are organic, vegan, raw, all natural and contains fair-traded ingredients.

8. How do you feel being part of Udaan ?
I really feel at home with Udaan. Charu and Kamayani have done a stupendous job of creating such a wonderful platform for Indian women entrepreneurs. It gives direction, you see and learn from fellow entrepreneurs. It’s a terrific support system and Charu and Kamayani mentor and help Udaan members self-lessly. It’s a rare virtue to possess in today’s world. Kudos to them and to Udaan!
